Ioannes 61 was archbishop of Ravenna ("Iohanne archiepiscopo Ravenne"); he was summoned by pope Gregory III (Gregorios 7) with other Western bishops ("cum ceteris episcopis istius Sperie partis") to the Council of Rome (in c. 732) which condemned iconoclasm and excommunicated those who rejected the traditional veneration of icons: Lib. Pont. 92. 3. In 742/743 (indiction 11) he was still archbishop of Ravenna and together with the exarchos Eutychius (Eutychios 4) wrote a letter to pope Zacharias (Zacharias 16) seeking help against a threatened attack on Ravenna by the Lombard king Liutprand 1: Lib. Pont. 93. 12 ("una cum Iohanne archiepiscopo ecclesiae Ravennatis"). [Duchesne, Lib. Pont., p. 437, n. 23] refers to Agnellus (Lib. Pont. Eccl. Rav. 151-153) for traditions about this man; Agnellus refers to, but does not quote, his epitaph and gives the length of his episcopate as eight years, certainly too short).
