Grimoald 5 was bishop of Polimartium (Bomarzo); chosen by the bishop of Rome, Nicolas I (Nikolaos 28), to go to Bulgaria with Dominicus of Trevi (Dominikos 3) and a number of priests to select a new archbishop of Bulgaria; Grimoald 5 was instructed to remain in Bulgaria with Paulus, the bishop of Populonia (Paulos 57), and organise Christian teaching for the people; before they could leave the emperor Michael III (Michael 11) died and was succeeded by Basil (Basilios 7): Lib. Pont. 107. 74-75. The date was therefore 867.
