Gregorios 8 was a logothetes (Γρηγόριον λογοθέτην) serving under the rebel Artabasdos 1, who sent him in 743 as envoy to the new caliph al-Walid II (Walid 2) to seek support against the emperor Constantine V (Konstantinos 7): Theoph. AM 6234. At the same time Constantine V (Konstantinos 7) sent his own envoy, Andreas 4.
