Germanos 5 was a deacon (diakonos); owner of a seal dateable to the eighth century (so Zacos and Veglery) or the late sixth or early seventh century (so Laurent): Zacos and Veglery 839 = Laurent, Corpus V 3, no. 1835. Obv.: +Αγ[ια] - Σοφια β - οηθει+. Rev.: [Γ]ερ - μανου - διακο - νου. Laurent read the name and title as: Ἑρμογένους διακόνου. Because of the invocation, Ἁγία Σοφία βοήθει, both editors considered him possibly to be a deacon of the Great Church (Hagia Sophia).
