Diogenes 3 was an asekretis; he sent an enquiry on the subject of icon veneration to Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite) and received a reply stating Theodoros's views: Theod. Stud., Ep. 491, pp. 725-726 (addressed Διογένει ἀσηκρῆτις). The date of the letter is unknown; it was possibly after 815, when the subject again became a public issue, and possibly under Michael II when the iconoclast persecution relaxed and circumstances therefore permitted freer discussion. This dating is very uncertain, however.
