In 740 the Arabs suffered a major defeat in Africa with heavy losses including their commander, whose name is given as Damaskenos 1 (σὺν τῷ στρατηγοῦντι ὀνόματι Δαμασκηνῷ): Theoph. AM 6231. On the Berber revolt of 739-740, cf. Shaban, Islamic History I, pp. 150-152 (Syrian troops were sent to Africa and a contingent from Damascus was later settled in Spain). See also Mango and Scott, Theophanes pp.571-572, n. 6, for a possible identification.
