Chaleb 1 was an emir (Χαλὲ τὸν ἀμηραῖον), sent by the caliph (Mu`awiya 1) in 673/674 with a large naval force to strengthen the forces already in Asia Minor under Muhammad 1 and Kaisos (Qays 1) and to lead the expedition against Constantinople; described as very capable and a daring soldier: Theoph. AM 6164 (ὡς ἱκανώτατον καὶ τολμηρὸν πρὸς μάχην), Nic. Brev. 32 (very loyal and experienced in warfare). He made his first attack at Hebdomon: Nic. Brev. 32.
