In 811 Byzantios 1 was a close attendant on the emperor Nikephoros I (Nikephoros 8) (Βυζάντιος, ὁ τούτου ἐπιστήθιος οἰκέτης) and accompanied him on the expedition against the Bulgars; shortly before the expedition marched into Bulgar territory (which was on 20 July), Byzantios 1 deserted to the Bulgar leader Krum 1 from Markellai, taking with him imperial costumes and one hundred pounds of gold; this was widely regarded as a portent of doom for Nikephoros 8, according to Theophanes: Theoph. AM 6303.
