Berto 1 was a native of Spoletium and a Lombard, he was a soldier who took part in the attack on Ratchis 1 and Aistulf 1 between Fanum Fortunae and Forum Sempronii by a joint force of Romans and Lombards of Spoletium; described as very brave, Berto 1 challenged Ratchis 1 personally, only to be struck off his horse by him; however Ratchis 1 allowed him to make his escape: Paul.
