Basilios 1 was a disciple (μαθητής) of bishop John of Gotthia (Ioannes 6); he was a monk ( μοναχός); he once thought of going away but was dissuaded by Ioannes 6 who had read his thoughts: Vita Ioannis Gotthiae, pp.193-4.
