Athanasios 16 is mentioned in a letter of Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite) in May/June 819; Athanasios 16 escorted Theodoros 15 from his place of exile in Boneta to Smyrna in early 819 and en route was received with him by the bishop of Chonai (Anonymus 667); they met and drank with the bishop but did not eat with him as he was an iconoclast; Athanasios 16 is alluded to only as τὸν κύριον Ἀθανάσιον: Theod. Stud., Ep. 407. Presumably Athanasios 16 was an imperial official, and perhaps himself a supporter of icon veneration.
