Artaser 1 was a protospatharios; owner of a seal dateable to the eighth century: Zacos and Veglery 3078. Obv.: cruciform monogram of Θεοτόκε βοήθει, with τω - σω - δου - λω in the corners. Rev.: Αρταση - ρ α' σπα - θαριω. The name and title read: Ἀρτασὴρ πρωτοσπαθαρίῳ.
