Argait 1 was an official of the Lombard ducatus of Forum Iulii; he is described as "rector loci illius, quem "sculdahis" lingua propria dicunt", and as noble, and physically and mentally powerful ("vir nobilis animoque et viribus potens"); he pursued but failed to catch some Slav raiders, for which he was accused by the dux of Forum Iulii, Ferdulf 1, of laziness, punning on the name "Argait"; this quarrel created a rivalry between the two, so that when they went to meet an army of Slav invaders they led their men into a battle in circumstances which gave them no chance; their army suffered heavy losses ("omnis nobilitas periit Foroiulanorum") and both Ferdulf 1 and Argait 1 were killed: Paul. Diac. Hist., Lang. VI 24.
