Anonymus 764 was bishop of Hierapolis; according to a report which reached Ignatius the Deacon (Ignatios 9) he was in possession of a book, a copy of the four Gospels, which rightfully belonged to Ignatios 9; when asked to return it, he refused; Ignatios 9 wrote to the deacon and protonotarios (at Constantinople) Theophilos 57 for help, and to the patriarch Methodios 1 seeking his intervention to secure the book's return: Ignatius Diac., Ep. 53 (to Theophilos 57; it mentions ὁ νυνὶ προέδρος Ἱεραπόλεως who though nearing death refused to return the book), Ep. 54 (to Methodios 1; mentions τοῦ ἁγιωτάτου τῆς Ἱεραπολιτῶν ἐκκλησίας προέδρου). The letter was written in 843/847 and when Ignatios 9 last knew the whereabouts of the book it was with Michael 6, bishop of Synnada, who died in 826.
