Anonymus 555 was an imperial interpreter (τινα τῶν βασιλικῶν ἑρμηνευτῶν) at Constantinople, well known to the emperor and his officials: Mir. Dem. II 4, 234. He owned an estate (προάστειον) in Thrace near the city of the Bizytanoi (presumably Bizye): Mir. Dem. II 4, 234, 238. He induced Perboundos 1, king of the (Slav) Rhynchinoi, to flee from custody in Constantinople and take refuge on his estate, from where in a few days he could easily be guided to safety in his own country: Mir. Dem. II 4, 234-235. Perboundos 1 was discovered when Anonymus 555's wife (Anonyma 53) was observed taking food to him and he was taken back to Constantinople where he revealed the details of his escape; the interpreter (Anonymus 555), his wife (Anonyma 53) and his family were all executed: Mir. Dem. II 4, 238-239. As an interpreter trusted by Perboundos 1 the Slav, he presumably knew the Slav language spoken by Perboundos 1 (although Perboundos 1 was apparently fluent in Greek). For the probable date of this affair, see Lemerle, Les plus anciens recueils, II, pp. 128-133.
