Anonymus 222 was a member of the imperial bodyguard (τινα τῶν ὑπασπιστῶν; Theoph. Cont. IV 44, p. 209), who, on the orders of the emperor Michael III (Michael 11), attempted to assassinate Basilios 7 while out hunting; he missed with his spear and later confessed everything: Theoph. Cont. IV 44 (pp. 209-210). The date was shortly before the murder of Michael III (Michael 11), in 867.
