Anonymus 188 was an Athinganos, a close friend of an unnamed strategos and possibly on his staff (τῶν Ἀθιγγάνων τις γνωστός τε καὶ οἰκεῖος τῷ στρατηγῷ ὤν: Theoph. Cont. II 5, p. 44), to whom he recommended Michael 10 and one other man (perhaps Leo 15), supposedly prophesying that both would rise to fame and become emperors: Theoph. Cont. II 5 (p. 44), 7 (p. 46), Genesius II 1, cf. Zon. XV 22.14 (τις Ἀθίγγανος). The strategos was possibly Bardanes 3 Tourkos, and the date perhaps 802. See further Michael 10. See also Anonymus 57.
