Almoutzes 1 was voivode (βοέβοδος) of the Turks (i.e. the Magyars or Hungarians) and father of Arpades 1; when the khagan of the Khazars (Anonymus 745) wished to appoint a ruler (ἄρχων) of the Turks, Lebedias 1 suggested that he appoint either Almoutzes 1 or his son Arpades 1; the Turks (Hungarians) preferred Arpades 1, who was the one appointed: Const. Porph., DAI 38, 43ff. The date was probably around the mid ninth century; cf. Arpades 1. See also Const. Porph., DAI, Comm., ed. Jenkins, p. 148.
