Abolios 1 was a monk; he was joint-addressee with Ioannes 335 of a letter from Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite), probably written during the reign of Michael 10 (therefore between 821 and 826, Fatouros, p. 206*); they supported the veneration of icons in the face of persecution (ἐν τῷ σεισμῷ τῆς εἰκονομαχικῆς αἱρέσεως ἄσειστοι διεμείνατε: p. 175, lines. 8-9) and were sent into exile during the reign of Leo V (Leo 15) (τῇ φυγῇ τὸν τοῦ διωγμοῦ θεομακάριστον στέφανον κομισάμενοι: p. 175, lines 10-11); they were acquaintances of bishop Isaias 3, who delivered their greetings to Theodoros 15 (προσηγορίαν ὑμῶν τῶν ἁγίων κομισάμενος παρὰ Ἠσαΐου: p. 175, line 2); they are styled ἅγιοι πατέρες and ἡ ὁσία καὶ πατρικὴ ὑμῶν δυάς (p. 175, lines 9-10, line 4), and so were probably older than Theodoros; Theodoros asked for a letter from them: Theod. Stud. Ep., 63, pp. 175-176 (addressed Ἀβολίῳ καὶ Ἰωάννῃ μονάζουσιν).
