According to one source cited by Tabari (al-Waqidi), in AH 52 (Jan./Dec. 672), `Abdallah b. Mas`adah al-Fazari (Abdullah 6) was appointed by Sufyan 1 to succeed him as leader of a winter campaign against the Byzantines when Sufyan was dying: Tabari XVIII, p. 165. Later Tabari cites him as a source for an anecdote about the caliph Mu`awiya 1 ("`Abdallah b. Mas`adah b. Hakamah al-Fazari from the sons of the family of Badr" ): Tabari XVIII, p. 222, with note 585 (a Companion of the Prophet, a supporter of Mu`awiya 1, he was still alive when Marwan 1 became caliph, i.e. in 684).
